La vita
Nato a Calcutta nel 1861 da famiglia ricca e aristocratica, Rabindranath Tagore studiò giurisprudenza in Inghilterra.
Tornato presto in patria, coltivò diverse forme d’arte: poesia, narrativa, teatro, musica, filosofia.
Viaggiò in Europa, in Asia, in America ed assorbì alcuni contenuti della cultura occidentale.
Esordì molto giovane come narratore, ma la prima opera che lo consacrò alla fama fu la raccolta di poesie Canti d’offerta uscita nel 1913.
Dei moltissimi libri di Tagore ricordiamo: i romanzi Il naufragio, Gora, La casa e il mondo; i drammi teatrali La vendetta della natura, Il re, Ciclo di primavera; le raccolte poetiche Il bambino, Il giardiniere, Frontiera, Sul letto d’infermo, Guarigione.
Tagore morì a Santiniketan presso Bolpur, nel Bengala, nel 1941.
